A South Loop Chicago Hotel Designed To Be "The Greatest Of All Times"

Hilton Chicago was destined to be different. Born in 1927 as The Stevens Hotel, it was the culmination of founding father James W. Stevens' dream to construct the world's largest hotel. In May of 1927, the dream became a reality. An awe-inspiring landmark among South Loop Chicago hotels, it was an engineering marvel. It measured 28 stories, boasted 3,000 luxurious rooms, 5 sub-basements, an 18 hole roof-top golf course with real grass, a three-story laundry, its own hospital and a 1,200 seat theatre with "talking motion picture" equipment.

During the famous St. Valentine’s Day Massacre in 1929, Al Capone's top triggerman, "Machine Gun" Jack McGurn, the suspected planner of the massacre, claimed to be in room 1919 at the Stevens all day with his girlfriend, Louise Rolfe, later known as the "Blonde Alibi." Charges against him were later dropped.

In 1942, the hotel was requisitioned by the U.S. Army, and guest rooms became barracks, the Grand Ballroom a mess hall, and other rooms were turned into offices and training rooms. One year later the hotel returned to civilian life. Conrad Hilton bought The Stevens for 7.5 million dollars in 1945 and in 1951 renamed it The Conrad Hilton. Since then this renowned hotel has seen many renovations and innovations. A stunning $185 million redesign in 1985 sets this timeless South Loop hotel among the finest addresses in the world and the Chicago home of many of the world's leaders of industry, finance, politics, and society.
